Though effervescent EDM project White Panda made its name as a duo with a long series of mashups and, later, remixes in the early to mid-2010s, it was down to one member in 2018. By that time, the project had topped the Hype Machine chart over two dozen times. As a masked solo act, White Panda released its first original single, “Hands on Me,” in June 2018.
Originally known as the White Panda, the duo of Chicago-based DJ Procast (Tom Evans) and Los Angeles’ DJ Griffi (Dan Griffith), later known as Gryffin, released their first mix album, the hour-long Versus, in 2009. They quickly found success on streaming sites and Internet radio. Rematch and Pandamonium followed in 2010 and 2011, respectively. By the arrival of Bambooyah in 2012, they were one of Soundcloud’s five most-streamed artists and toured with the likes of Mac Miller, Tiësto, and Steve Aoki. Their 2013 album Bearly Legal featured a popular mashup of Mike Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” and Disclosure’s “Latch” featuring Sam Smith. Still working as a duo, another mix album, The Pawprint, followed in 2015. Its mashup of Lil Dicky and Great Food Fine OK called “Save Dat One for Me” garnered millions of streams. In addition to their dozens of mashups, in the months that followed, they ventured into remixing with their takes on artists including ZAYN, Lorde, and Ember Island.
The album charted on the Billboard 200, while the White Panda mashup reached number 47 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in early 2018. That June, White Panda officially became a solo project with the release of the original song “Hands on Me,” featuring Loote.
