Trapdoor Social’s founding members, Merritt Graves and Skylar Funk, met in an Environmental program at Pomona College and bonded over a shared concern for the future of the planet. They started off on a journey to make music and do some good along the way.
Trapdoor Social is taking on 2016 with new music and a new platform from which to sing it, as founders Skylar Funk and Merritt Graves realize their long-time dream of solar-powered concerts. In June the band hosted the first annual Sunstock Solar Festival, a 100% solar powered music and arts event promoting support and awareness for solar technologies and donating all of its proceeds to advance solar improvements in California communities.
Having expanded from a duo to a 5-piece, their August 12 eponymous debut album is an impassioned call to action. It’s a raucous, anthemic environmental and social critique, erupting with signature rock guitar and synth bass riffs from new additions Louie Gonzalez and Patrick Griffen. Drummer Ben Ebert has been added as a full-time member.
Their 2012 EP Death Of A Friend featured Death Cab For Cutie’s Jason McGerr on drums. It made waves when “Like You Never” became the #1 listener-requested track on KROQ’s “Locals Only” show. “Away” garnered significant around the country and has been featured on a national for the past three years. The album’s “Inertia” was recently heard on the TV show “Shameless”.
For the 2014, Science of Love EP, they decided to channel their music toward an environmental initiative in their community and used the release to raise $35k for solar roofing, which they committed to Homeboy Industries. Songs from this album also got significant airplay nationwide.
The following December, the band toured to Colorado to play RXP1039’s Christmas festival. Having discovered that the local high school (Mesa Ridge HS) marching band program was underfunded, the boys recorded “Fine On My Own” with the marching band to help launch a fundraiser to help keep the program alive. The song attained “Hall of Fame” Status on Las Vegas’s X107.5 nightly contest “The Beatdown” by winning ten times in a row and became a top ten song in Colorado Springs. Trapdoor Social toured to Colorado in May 2015 and promoted the fundraiser by organizing and performing a benefit show with the marching band. The fundraiser brought in over $7K for the school.
2016 has been a busy year for Trapdoor Social. They started the year with the release of a double b-sides collection Kid In The Sky / Download My Dream.  They will be donating all of their album pre-sales to construct a vegetable learning garden with their non-profit partner After School All-Stars, at the Downtown Value School in Los Angeles (Link). National touring has resumed, whenever possible using their new solar trailer to power outdoor concerts around the country.

The Burgeoning’s name represents their musical M.O.; they are a fresh take on what rock means in this generation’s musical landscape. The Bensalem, Pennsylvania-based band’s never-ending pursuit of adventure and self-discovery drives their signature brand of poppy yet inventive indie rock. The four-piece is made up of brothers Logan and Alex Thierjung on vocals and bass respectively, lead guitarist Mark Menkevich, and drummer Brandon Bradley. Born from the early songwriting sessions of Logan and Alex in 2011, The Burgeoning’s sound is a combination of the various musical influences of its members. Logan’s admiration of trailblazing British indie rock manifests in his crunchy guitar riffs and, at times, delicate vocals while Brandon’s propulsive drumming is a result of his tenure performing with church groups at an early age. Mark’s sugary guitar melodies reveal his love of all things Beatles, and Alex’s rumbling bass lines pay homage to the 90’s alt-rock giants who formed the genre. Their debut EP, Love Alchemy, Life Algorithm, showcases The Burgeoning’s captivating melodies and haunting lyrics across six tracks of raw, millennial angst. Independently released in early 2014, the EP was a solid introduction to Philadelphia’s underground music scene and soon spawned a loyal #TeamBurge fan base. The band is currently rocking crowds with their energetic live shows while prepping for a spring tour with dates to be announced. Now the band is releasing the EP to the masses on October 14th. These alt-rock newcomers’ individual styles blend to become a unified sound with a distinct, shared mission—to take a sonic journey through the hearts and imaginations of their listeners by drawing them into The Burge’s philosophy of unity, discovery, and growth. In this band’s movement, there is no end to the adventure; only new ones to begin.

On her excellently received album, If Night Turns to Daylight, Lakin displays her multiple talents of writing, performing, arranging, and producing. Her striking collection of songs represents a revolution of the spirit—reflecting themes that go beyond the superficial and into the deeper human experience of the reconciliation of the soul. Lakin’s music is sure to penetrate not only the listener’s ear, but the listener’s heart.
